How to: navigate around a module page

Module contents

  • You always have access to My Modules, where all your modules are listed within the menu at the top of the page on the left.  Within this menu you can also access the Dashboard, where you can access your recently accessed modules, activities that are due, etc.

  • You can also access the Dashboard by clicking on the 'University logo' at the top-left of the screen.

Module index navigation

When on the front page of a module, there is a Module Index menu at the left-hand side of the page you can open, which allows you to jump to a particular section within your module to aid navigation, reduce scrolling and quickly access relevant resources.

Within the Module Index, if you select the 3 dotted lines, it will provide ‘Expand all’ and ‘Collapse all’ options. Selecting one of these will either collapse all activities and resources within a Section/Topic in the Module Index or open up all activities and resources within the Module Index, providing further navigation options.

Expand central column

There is a 'Full screen' toggle button that allows you to make the central column, where the module content is, fill the screen.  This is especially useful when viewing embedded videos and SCORM packages.

Navigation trail

  • When you are in an activity/resource in a Moodle module, you can always get back to the front page of the module by finding the navigation trail above the activity/resource title you are in and clicking on the module name (first link) in the trail.

  • Also, if you are visiting a sub-page within a Moodle module and press the back button on a web browser, it will now take you back to where you were. 

Notes on usage:  

  • If the window is scrolled more than 205 pixels, a ‘floating’ full-screen toggle appears in the top right of the screen. It disappears if you scroll back up.

  • If mobile mode (or responsive mode) is triggered (screen width 768px or less)

    • The full-screen toggle button(s) disappear as they no longer serve any purpose.

    • If you were in full-screen mode (with no side blocks), the side blocks will now be below the content area (as usual for mobile mode).

  • If JavaScript is off there is no full-screen toggle button

  • If fullscreen mode has been triggered, it persists until the user clicks the toggle button again

  • The icon changes with arrows pointing out/in on each toggle

  • The toggle button does not appear on the login page

  • Side blocks disappear completely if full-screen mode is triggered. They can be retrieved by toggling back to normal screen mode

  • Ctrl + Alt + b is an alternative way to toggle screen mode

  • Once triggered there is no fixed width, i.e., if you stretch the window across two monitors you will be able to utilise the full content area

  • It should work on Chrome, Firefox and Microsoft Edge
